HUNTING FOR WINNERS

HUNTING FOR WINNERS
June 20, 2018 Lee Bolingbroke

Day 2 of Royal Ascot has arrived, with just the one Group 1 race on the card, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at 4.20. As this event will be won by Cracksman at around 8-15 we can swiftly move on.

The opener is the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at 2.30, with 22 young ladies tearing it up over the minimum trip and the hot favourite is the American raider Chelsea Cloisters, available at a truly miserable 11-4. Of course this filly may be the flying machine that Wesley Ward says she is and there is no way to compare her only win with any of the other runners, but it does mean that we can have an each way bet on Clive Cox‘s Shades Of Blue at 9-2 and get 4 places as well – so that’s what we’ll do.

The Queen’s Vase at 3.05 is for 3-y-os over 14 furlongs, which is much farther than most of the field have ever tackled before. Thus, official ratings may not mean much and we put forward Stream Of Stars as our suggestion at 4-1. Trained by yesterday’s treble hero J Gosden, this Sea The Stars offspring looks like it stays longer than the mother-in-law and we’ll leave it to the Mad Italian to bring him home in front.

At 3.40 the Duke Of Cambridge Stakes over the straight mile has the A O’B trained Hydrangea as favourite at 15-8. Carrying a penalty and on fastish ground this is not for us and we like the chances of last year’s close second Aljazzi, each way at 5-1. Carefully prepared for another go, Will Buick‘s ride will surely go close.

And now to the Royal Hunt Cup at 5.00, with just 30 of the best mile handicappers vying for a first prize of £108,937.50.

We’ll give it a whirl with 3 against the field, especially as at least six places (seven in a couple of places) are being paid.

Our mini portfolio consists of Escobar at 14-1, Medahim at 22-1 and Hors De Combat at 50-1 – hope springs eternal.

The day ends at 5.35 with the Jersey Stakes, a Group 3 over 7f and it gets easier ‘cos there are only 22 in this one.

With 4 places on offer we recommend a fairly confident bash at Emaraaty at 11-2.

Back tomorrow for a look at ‘Laydees Day’.
