THE SMART MONEY’S ON CALL

THE SMART MONEY’S ON CALL
June 29, 2018 Lee Bolingbroke

Cameras are at Newcastle tonight for the second day of the Northumberland Plate meeting and there are four races being shown for our delectation and delight.

Main event is the Group 3 Stobart Energy Hoppings Fillies’ Stakes at 8.05 over 10 furlongs of the Tapeta track.

Strong favourite for this race is the Sir Michael trained 6-y-o Smart Call, which is available to back at 2-1. This ex-Souf Ifrican trained globetrotter has failed to win for the Stoute yard in 8 runs, but has been plying her trade at the very highest level and, frankly, this race just ain’t the highest level.

Gifts don’t come along very often, but this could be one, so a lumpy win bet is recommended. If there is a danger, it’s almost certainly in the shape of the 3-y-o Magnolia Springs, which stormed home in a Goodwood Listed race last time out and is very much on the improve. We don’t go for staking plans, but in this case, we suggest a ‘cover’ win bet on Magnolia Springs at 9-2 and the reverse forecast is, needless to say, ‘de rigeur’.

The other three televised races are in the ‘fierce handicap’ category and we put up two against the field in the first one, the A V Dawson Handicap at 6.20,

The two beasties in question are Circuit Judge at 12-1 and Letmestopyouthere at 6-1, each way bets the both. The latter would perhaps be a stronger selection, as the price reflects, but young Sara Del Fabbro is having just her third ride in public and her first against the senior jocks, so let’s wish her the best of luck.

At 6.55 the A W Jenkinson Handicap over the straight mile has a field of 14 and those nice, kind bookmaking people are offering 4 places, so we are happy to put up Two For Two at 7-1 and Party Fears Too at 6-1 as our two each way bets. These two have the best recent form and we should get a run.

At 7.30 the long-standing Gosforth Park Cup is run over 5f and the question is: ‘which side do you want to be on?’

In the two previous runnings of this race, on this surface, the first three home were drawn 1-3-4 (2016) and 10-14-9 (2017), so no help there, then.

Candidly, we don’t really think this race is a betting proposition, but, if you must, try a micro bet on Holmeswood e/w @ 10-1 – but don’t hold your breath.

Back tomorrow for a look at The Plate.

Summary:

Smart Call 8.05 Newcastle win @ 2-1 William Hill
Magnolia Springs 8.05 Newcastle small win @ 9-2 10Bet
