Racing at Newcastle has been brought forward today to avoid a clash with the France v Argentina footy match and the action kicks off at 12.20.

Feature race on the card is the Stobart Rail & Civils (No, me neither) Northumberland Plate Handicap with a field of 20 vying for the first prize of £92,385.

Favourite,at ludicrously short odds, is the Tony Bloom owned Withhold, which was last seen doing us a favour by running away with the Cesarewitch last October. 12lbs higher and without a recent run are enough reasons for applying the Spanish Archer to this 5-y-o at a best price 4-1.

Further down the weights are two that catch our eye, starting with the Ed Dunlop trained Amazing Red, which is available at a more palatable 13-2. This horse has been re-invented as a stayer, winning its only try at today’s trip and, most recently, storming away from its field over 14 furlongs at Newmarket. That win puts it 4lbs ahead of the handicapper today and that might just be enough.

Our other pick is Mr James Goldie‘s runner Sir Chauvelin, a horse which comes here at the absolute top of its game after a strong finishing second at Royal Ascot over an inadequate trip and this course winner should be backed each way at 14-1.

First race on the card at 12.20 is the Betfred “Supports Jack Berry House” Handicap over 6f and it’s 11-2 the field of 14. We’ll cover this race with each way suggestions in the shape of Shanghai Glory (7-1) and Summerghand (12-1) and hope for the best.

The Betfred TV Chipchase Stakes at 12.55 is a 6f Group 3 and it is entirely possible that last year’s 2nd & 3rd will finish 1st & 2nd this time around. What is difficult to predict is which way round, so we recommend a win bet on Kimberella at 4-1 and an each way bet on Intisaab at 8-1.

The other televised race is at 1.30 and this is the consolation race for the Plate, known as the Vase. 20 runners again for this and that man Goldie can win this one as well with Euchen Glen, available at 10-1. Having just won a turf handicap off a mark of 94, EG can run here off 93, after two uninspiring AW runs over a year ago, so ‘well in’. Is the phrase that springs to mind.

We also suggest an each way bet on Sam Missile at 20-1, as an ‘under-the-radar’ improver.

The ITV cameras are also at the meeting at Newmarket, covering the first two races and in the Betway Empress Fillies’ Stakes at 1.10 we like the look of Karl Burke‘s runner Ellheidi as an each way bet at 7-1. There was much to like about her debut effort at Haydock and this daughter of Invincible could cause a surprise.

The Betway Criterion Stakes, a Group 3, at 1.45 completes the TV coverage and this race sees a rematch between 3 who fought out the finish of a similar contest at Haydock 3 weeks ago. We will take Tabarrak to prevail today and recommend a win bet at 4-1.

Right, that’s it – bring on Lionel.
