COUNTING DOWN TO FOOTY-O-CLOCK

COUNTING DOWN TO FOOTY-O-CLOCK
July 7, 2018 Lee Bolingbroke

The racing powers-that-be have very sensibly scheduled today’s events early in the day, leaving plenty of time to count your winnings before settling in to watch Gareth‘s boys engage in a bit of Swede-bashing.

We first go to Sandown, where the feature race is the Coral-Eclipse at 2.10. looks

In the unfortunate absence of ante-post favourite and Derby winner Masar, this race has taken on a slightly different look, with the market making it a match between two of Masar‘s victims Roaring Lion and Saxon Warrior.

However, we are going to fly in the face of statistics and predict a victory for a filly for the first time in 26 years – brave or foolhardy, we’ll find out at 2.13pm.

Happily is already twice a Group 1 winner, beating Masar in the second of those and everything is in place for a big run today. A win bet at 11-2 is advised.

The Coral Challenge Handicap at 12.55 is our next port of call, a fierce looking mile contest with 15 runners. We advise two each way against this field – Daira Prince at 13-2 and Manson at 12-1. The former, unbeaten this season is the big improver while the latter is well overpriced owing to its unfashionable trainer.

The Coral Distaff Listed Fillies race at 1.30 looks to have a false favourite in Narella at a very skinny 2-1 and we will oppose her with an each way bet on Awesometank at 13-2.

Over at Haddock, the bet365 Handicap at 12.35, for 3-y-os over a distance of ground looks a good opportunity for Making Miracles, after a sterling effort at Royal Ascot and Braveheart‘s inmate should be backed to win at 4-1.

Having a quiet lurk at the bottom of the weights is the Alan King trained Elysees, which is trading at 18-1. Considering this horse has an 8lb pull in the weights with Rude Awakening (4-1) for just over a length, we can’t resist an each way bet.

The Lancashire Oaks at 1.10 has only seven runners but is an open-looking affair. With the w-f-a allowance favouring staying 3-y-os, we suggest a win bet on A O’Bs Flattering, fresh from winning a Group 3 at Cork in determined fashion. 9-2 are the odds of reward.

Finally, the valuable bet365 Old Newton Cup at 1.45 is a ‘two against the field’ race, starting with an each way bet on the still improving Teodoro at 6-1 and ending with an each way bet on the first time handicapping Wingingit at an artisan 16-1.

Now off to make the paper hat.
