Opening day of the three-day Newmarket July Festival kicks off this afternoon and, with the chief distraction out of the way, we may as well concentrate on the racing.
The Bahrain Trophy Stakes, a Group 3 over 13 furlongs at 1.50 has afield of eight, with the favourite at 5-2 the John Gosden trained First Eleven. This son of Frankel was unlucky not to win the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot, being repeatedly denied a clear run through, eventually finishing third. That was off a mark of 91 and, although raised 6lbs since, a mark of 97 leaves him with a lot to find with others.
This especially applies to Guiseppe Garibaldi, who also ran at the Royal meeting, finishing third in the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes before another sound run at the Curragh, when second to a stable companion.
Runners from the Ascot event have since finished 2nd and 4th in the Irish Derby, so the form has substance and we recommend a win bet at 3-1.
Finishing well in 6th at Ascot was Wells Farhh Go, still very much learning his trade after only four runs and likely to be suited by the extra furlong of today’s contest, so it makes sense to back this one each way at 15-2.
The Arqana July Stakes at 2.25 represents a fine opportunity for Advertise to gain compensation for being drawn on the ‘wrong’ side in the Coventry at Royal Ascot and Martin Meade‘s colt should be whacked into at 6-4.
The bet365 Handicap at 3.00 has 20 3-y-os blasting over 6f and, frankly, we don’t have a scooby what will win it, so let’s move on.
The Princess Of Wales’s Arqana Racing Club Stakes at 3.35 over 12f has a field of seven and, with 4-y-os having such an impressive record in this race, we are keen on the chances of the still improving Mirage Dancer, trained by Sir Michael, ridden by Sir Ryan and available as a win bet at 9-4.
The Maiden at 4.10 has three horses vying for favouritism at around 7-2 but we have spotted a potential big improver in this and therefore recommend an each way punteroony on No Way Jose at a palatable 16-1.
The Edmondson Hall Solicitors Sir Henry Cecil Stakes at 4.45 is a race over a mile and we continue our policy of following Group 1 form in a Listed event with a confident selection in Gabr, which can, and should, be backed at 100-30.
