Sunny skies are back for the start of the Glorious Goodwood festival, which runs from today ’til Saturday and today will probably be the only day without the word ‘firm’ appearing somewhere in the going description.

A tad of the wet stuff overnight has rendered the ground Good all over, so there should be no excuses for any runner.

The Group 1 Qatar Goodwood Cup at 3.35 takes centre stage and Stradivarius is odds-on at 4-7 to continue on his merry way and mop up another major prize to add to the Yorkshire and Ascot versions which he has already pouched this season.

However, although five of the seven strong field appear to have little chance of winning, the same cannot be said of Torcedor, trained by Jessie Harrington.

This 6-y-o was just a length behind Stradivarius at Ascot and is a pound better off today, which surely will make it very close, especially as the ease in the ground will favour the Irish challenger.

With these two apparently miles ahead of the rest, it makes sense to recommend an each way bet on Torcedor at 4-1.

There are two more Group races on the card, the first being the Qatar Vintage Stakes at 2.25, for which the once-raced Confiding and Braveheart‘s Dark Vision are vying for favouritism at 4-1.

Although the race won by Martyn Meade‘s colt has worked out exceptionally well, we think there is plenty more to come from the unbeaten Dark Vision and recommend an each way bet at 4-1.

The Qatar Lennox Stakes at 3.00 features two previous winners of the race and a classy 3-y-o, Tip Two Win, which is the favourite at 9-2.

However, we’ll take ’em all on with an each way punt on Diddy David Elsworth‘s representative Sir Dancelot. Last seen finishing like the 4.15 from Paddington in the 6f July Cup, today’s distance is spot on and with the now UK based Gerald Mosse doing the steering, this rates a cracking each way bet at 11-2.

The other televised race is the opener at 1.50, the Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap over ten furlongs and, in the hope that this is the right form line, we recommend each way bets on Alfarris (13-2) and Pivoine (12-1).

These two crossed swords last time out, finishing 2nd & 4th respectively in a hot Sandown handicap and it looks strong form in terms of today. A clear run for both may find them fighting out the finish.

Well, we live in hope.
