Day Two of the Doncaster St Leger meeting today sees a big improvement on yesterday’s moderate fare, with two Group 2 races at the heart of the action.

The DFS Park Hill Stakes over the Leger trip at 3.00 is the feature event and sees the reappearance of Roger Varian‘s rapidly improving 3-y-o filly Pilaster.

Winner of all her three races this season, this daughter of Nathaniel left her all-weather form well behind last time out when taking the Group 2 Lillie Langtry Stakes at Goodwood, showing guts and determination in the process, to prevail by a short knocker. With the second going on to take a Group 3 next time, this is undoubtedly the best form on offer and even with a 3lb penalty, she should be backed today at 11-8 to go in again.

The William Hill May Hill Stakes at 2.25 is a Group 2 over a mile for the 2-y-os and will go a long way to confirming the promise shown by Dubai Beauty, when winning her debut maiden by a length and a half, with the rest of the field out of sight. Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor has been on record recently, complaining that he ‘only’ has three Group class horses in his yard – well this is one of them and victory today may prevent any more wittering and whingeing, at least for the time being.

A win bet at 2-1 is advised.

Proceedings kick off with a fierce looking nursery at 1.50, but this field of 14 could just contain a bit of a blot, in the shape of Jeremy Noseda‘s Lady Cosette.

It’s not often that the handicapper makes a rick, but the 79 allocated to this Wootton Bassett filly looks lenient to say the least based on her recent exploits and she should be backed at 100-30.

Also in this race, we think that Itizzit is well overpriced, probably due to her ‘unfashionable’ trainer and therefore recommend an each way investment at 25-1.

The other race on the ‘telly’ is the Weatherbys Racing Bank £300,000 2-Y-O Stakes, worth a mere £147,540 to the winner and the stand-out runner in this is AO’B‘s entry The Irish Rover. Well up to Group status, this is a drop in class by a long way but is an each way price, so bash it at 5-1.

With the weights for this race determined by the yearling cost, Aim Power, trained by Richard Hannon gets a few pounds from everything else and yet has a rating of 95, so we will cover our anal regions with a win bet, also at 5-1.

More musings tomorrow.
