The Ladbrokes Trophy Chase is the main event at Newbury today and a smaller than usual field of 14 take their chances at 3.00 with £142,375 going to the winner.

Favourite at 7-2 is the Tom Lacey trained Thomas Patrick, which, if previous run style is anything to go by, will attempt to make every yard of the running for the 3 and a quarter mile trip. A tough ask, you may think, but this second season chaser has done nothing but improve since first sighting a fence and it might just do it. First bet of the day, therefore, is a win bet and trust ‘Dickie’.

Our each way bet in the race is the seemingly much improved The Young Master, which is available at 10-1. Had a go at this race in 2015, when our hero (SW-C) fell off at the first fence and now here they are again at the age of nine (that’s the horse, not the jockey).

After a desperate last season, this horse’s mark, well, plummeted to an extent where, having won both starts this season, it competes today off an eleven pound LOWER mark than in 2015. If he stays on board, we will get a run.

First of the televised races from Newbury is the Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle at 1.50 which is a 4-1 the field affair, headed by Speedo Boy and Champ. With the ground softening all the time, we pass on both of these and suggest each way bets on Sleep Easy at 12-1 and Vaziani at a sporting 28-1.

The Gerry Fielden Hurdle at 2.25 is a highly competitive nine runner affair with the 5-timer seeking Ballymoy market leader at 3-1. However, this might be a step too far for this 5-y-o and we prefer Mont Des Avaloirs, from the Paul Nicholls‘ yard. Back to hurdling after just one go over the larger obstacles, MDA‘s form from last season would give it every chance today. Take the 6-1 each way.

The Ladbrokes In Memory Of Tara Von Ihering Handicap Chase (?) at 3.35 closes the card and this race does have a worthy favourite in Lady Buttons, which can, and should, be backed at 3-1. Equally adept at fences and hurdles, this 8-y-o mare easily took a Listed hurdle at Wetherby on her reappearance and can follow up this afternoon.

Danger would appear to be the Harry Whittington trained Bigmartre, so we also suggest an each way bet here at 11-2.

The cameras are also at Newcastle to cover the Fighting Fifth at 2.05 and the BetVictor Rehearsal Handicap Chase at 3.20.

The shoot-out between Buveur D’Air and Samcro can only be watched, but we can get involved in the other race by backing Ballydine each way at 7-1.

Targeted at this race since ending its novice season with a gutsy win at Sandown, a mark of 134 could seriously underestimate this 8-y-o’s ability.

Let’s hope so.
