COME ON DOWN, JOHNNY CASH*
December 27, 2018 Lee Bolingbroke

Top class jump racing continues today, with televised contests at both Chepstow and Kempton.

Headline event is the Coral Welsh Grand National Handicap Chase at 2.50, for which a field of 20 is due to line up.

Favourite at 5-1 is the Colin Tizzard trained Elegant Escape, last seen finishing second in the Ladbroke/Hennessey at the beginning of the month. Officially 4lbs well in for this early closing race, EE will probably run its race, but the impost of 11st 8lbs has proved beyond most runners in this particular contest and, for that reason, the Spanish Archer is applied.

Our main pick for the race is Folsom Blue, trained across the water by Willie Mullins and available each way at 8-1. This 11-y-o was desperately unlucky not to win the Irish Grand National in April this year, being badly hampered on the run in when coming to win the race and, after a warm up spin over hurdles, can gain compensation today.

We will throw two other darts at this contest, namely Vieux Lion Rouge at 12-1 and the Midlands Grand National winner Regal Flow at 28s.

The televised action at Kempers starts with the 32Red.com Wayward Lad Novices’ Chase at 1.20, which sees the next step in Kalashnikov‘s inexorable rise to the top and, at a best price of 8-11, we can but watch and (hopefully) admire.

The 32Red Casino Mares’ Handicap Hurdle at 1.55 sees the return to action of Momella, which is the fav at 11-8.

Making her debut for Harry Fry 27 days ago, this 6-y-o was making smooth headway to join the leaders when stumbling and falling after the second last. But for that misfortune, she would undoubtedly have taken a hand in the finish of that Grade 2 contest and, back in a mere handicap, she should be backed with confidence.

The Unibet Desert Orchid Chase at 2.30 let’s us watch the mighty Altior strut its stuff, but at 1-6, watching is all we can do.

At 3.05, the 32Red.com Handicap Chase can be safely left to another Harry Fry inmate, Just A Sting, available to back at 100-30.

Unbeaten (2-2) over fences and not particularly pushed either, the 6-y-o should complete the hat-trick off just 6lb higher.

Have a good day, people.

Summary:

Folsom Blue 2.50 Chepstow 2pts e/w @ 8-1 (7 places Skybet)
Vieux Lion Rouge 2.50 Chepstow 1pt e/w @ 12-1 (7 places Skybet)
Regal Flow 2.50 Chepstow 1/2pt e/w @ 28-1 (7 places Skybet)
Momella 1.55 Kempton 6pts win @ 11-8
Just A Sting 3.05 Kempton 4pts win @ 100-30
