IT’S THAT MAN AGAIN

IT’S THAT MAN AGAIN
August 1, 2019 Lee Bolingbroke

You have to go back a fair way to remember Tommy Handley‘s catchphrase (ITMA) but it may well apply just after 3.35 this afternoon, when, on Day 3 of Glorious Goodwood, the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes is completed.

Favourite for this race at 15-8 is the dual Guineas winning filly Hermosa, from the Coolmore camp, who comes here after a narrow defeat in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. Stepping up to 10 furlongs for the first time, Hermosa is a formidable opponent, but we pin our hopes on the John Gosden trained Mehdaayih, who is available at 11-4.

This Frankel filly went off favourite for The Oaks only to suffer a nightmare run, eventually finishing 7th. She put the record straight next time, however, with a smooth win in a French Group 2 over 12 furlongs and with the drop in trip unlikely to hinder, we recommend you back the Mad Italian‘s mount.

The Unibet Handicap at 1.50 kicks off proceedings and the key piece of form here could be the London Gold Cup at Newbury in May, which featured 4 of today’s runners. Sinjaari came out best that day, finishing second to a horse which has gone on to win a French Group 2 by 3 lengths and, as handicaps go, this is really strong form.

At today’s revised weights, though, we give the best chance to Forest Of Dean, who finished fourth and has been put by for this race ever since. With El Loco Italiano unable to do the 8st 4lb, we get the excellent Harry Bentley, who has a strike rate of nearly 45% for the Gosden yard and, at 4-1 this rates a decent bet.

Only just behind FOD at Newbury was Braveheart‘s The Trader and it could be close between them this afternoon, so we also recommend an each way bet on this one at 11-1.

The Group 2 Qatar Richmond Stakes at 2.25 has a field of 13, with Richard Hannon‘s Threat installed as 7-4 favourite after running a close second in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot. No doubt that was an excellent effort and the stable make a habit of winning this race, but we think the value lies in two horses who were just behind Threat and are at much more attractive prices.

Step forward Guildsman (15-2) and Golden Horde (17-2) and back them both each way.

At 3.00 the Qatar Gordon Stakes takes place over 12 furlongs and the penalised Constantinople is the fav at 9-4. With the second in also carrying a penalty we go for a minor turn-up by suggesting an each way bet on the potential big improver Floating Artist at 33-1.

This son of Nathaniel was highly regarded and destined for the heights as a 2-y-o but, like most Nathaniels has taken his time to blossom, but did so last time out when taking a hot handicap off a mark of 100. The new rating of 103 gives him only a bit to find and, when you add in he is 1 from 1 on this course let’s have a dip.

Now over to Edgbaston to see if Jason Roy can survive the first over. (doubtful)

Summary:

Mehdaayih 3.35 Goodwood 4pts win @ 11-4

Forest Of Dean 1.50 Goodwood 2pts win @ 4-1

The Trader 1.50 Goodwood 1pt e/w @ 11-1

Guildsman 2.25 Goodwood 1pt e/w @ 15-2

Golden Horde 2.25 Goodwood 1pt e/w @ 17-2

Floating Artist 3.00 Goodwood 1.5pts e/w @ 33-1
