Two quality meetings at Newbury and Sandown are being covered by ITV this afternoon and it’s almost as if things are back to normal.
Over to Berkshire first of all and the …MansionBet Handicap at 1.50, which has a field of just 5 runners. 3-y-o handicaps early in the season are notoriously unpredictable (getting the excuse in straight away) but we think at the weights, Morisco has the best credentials.
Tom Dascombe‘s gelding won two of four races as a 2-y-o and, with the trainer and jockey both in good form, we recommend a win bet at 7-2.
The Maggie Dickson Fillies Stakes at 2.25 has a field of nine and all the early money has been for the William Haggas trained Mubtasimah, which is now the 7-2 favourite. This 4-y-o ended last year with three defeats in handicaps off marks in the mid-nineties, so something has to have happened for for her to win this.
We prefer to take a chance on the ex-German trained Viva Gloria, now in the capable hands of Jane Chapple-Hyam. This 5-y-o has the advantage of a recent run, staying on to be a close 6th in a Listed race at Kempton ten days ago and will undoubtedly improve for it. At an attractive 10-1 we suggest an each way bet.
Fillies are up again at 3.00 in the MansionBet Abingdon Fillies Stakes and here we look no further than Roger Varian‘s entry Cabaletta.
One run, one win is the tally so far and that victory over the potentially brilliant Frankly Darling marks out Cabaletta as the one to be with. Have a win bet at 5-2.
The Group 3 Diomed Stakes at 3.35 completes the coverage from Newbury and the market for this is headed by King Of Comedy at a skinny 6-4. The alternative spelling for this horse is ‘d-o-d-g-e’ and it’s anyone’s guess how he will perform so forgive us if we pass on this race.
Action at Sandown begins at 2.05 with the Unibet Handicap over 7f of the Esher track. Preference here is an each way bet on Ralph Beckett‘s representative Tomfre at 5-1.
Already boasting a last season victory over today’s favourite, Tomfre blew away the cobwebs with a spin around Lingfield 8 days ago and should run for his life today under the rejuvenated Rob Hornby.
The mad dash aka the Unibet Scurry Stakes at 2.40 contains our friendly neighbourhood ‘pigeon catcher’ (or so we are told), name of Sunday Sovereign and this one should be backed at 7-4 to win the race as well.
Last but not least is the handicap with a name we are not about to type, but it’s at 3.15 and, although the each way prices are long gone, we recommend a win bet on Exec Chef at 7-2.
Next week we will be covering a minor meeting in Berkshire for the full five days and hope you will be joining us.
