YOUTH VERSUS EXPERIENCE

Opening day of Glorious Goodwood has the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes as its centrepiece at 3.15, with the all-conquering Stradivarius going for an unprecedented four-peat.

John Gosden‘s 6-y-o warmed up for today with a contemptuous demolition job in the Ascot Gold Cup and is 4-7 to go in again today.

Strad would be 1-10 but for the lurking presence of the Ballydoyle 3-y-o Santiago, fresh from his triumph in the Irish Derby and the 15lb wfa allowance that Ryan Moore‘s mount receives makes for a fascinating match up. At 22-1 bar the two and just 7 runners, this is a ‘no bet’ race and we are happy just to watch.

Telly coverage of the meeting starts with the Unibet Handicap at 1.45, which has a field of 18 runners and it’s 11-2 the field.

This price brings in Fifth Position and Tinandali, which finished 3rd and 5th respectively in a 22 runner York handicap 10 days ago. This has the look of the right form line, so we suggest an each way bet on them both.

The Veuve Cliquot Vintage Stakes at 2.15 sees the reappearance of Royal Ascot winner Battleground from Aiden O’Brien‘s outfit. Stepping up from Listed Class to Group 2 is unlikely to be a problem on only his third run and we recommend lumping on at 11-8.

We also suggest a modest each way investment on the once raced Gorytus, trained oop North by Richard Fahey. Serious improvement is expected from this York Maiden winner and the 22-1 available looks too big.

At 2.45 the Qatar Lennox Stakes takes place and, realistically, only 4 of the 13 runners have a chance of winning (our opinion, but that’s what you pay for).

Space Blues is probably a worthy favourite, but little value at 9-4 and we prefer to recommend each way bets on our old friend Safe Voyage at 11-2 and the winner of this contest for the past two years Sir Dancelot at 6-1.

If we are correct in our initial assertion, with four places on offer we should be OK.

Final televised race at 3.45 is our bete noire the 5f handicap, this one being called the Qatar Handicap.

If we must, then we must – have small each way bets on Final Venture at 15-2 and Only Spoofing at 16-1.

Back tomorrow with more whimsical musings (and a few bets).

Summary:

Fifth Position 1.45 Goodwood 1pt e/w @ 11-2 (5 places)

Tinandali 1.45 Goodwood 1pt e/w @11-2 (5 places)

Battleground 2.15 Goodwood 4pts win @11-8

Gorytus 2.15 Goodwood 0.5pts e/w @ 22-1

Safe Voyage 2.45 Goodwood 1.5pts e/w @11-2 (4 places)

Sir Dancealot 2.45 Goodwood 1.5pts e/w @ 6-1 (4 places)

Final Venture 3.45 Goodwood 1pt e/w @ 15-2 (4 places Skybet)

Only Spoofing 3.45 Goodwood 0.5pts e/w @ 16-1 (4 places Skybet)
