SEND IN THE CLOWNS

SEND IN THE CLOWNS
July 29, 2020 Lee Bolingbroke

Day 2 of Glorious Goodwood, with the weather becoming much more appropriate to the appended epithet.

Undoubted highlight of the card is the Qatar Sussex Stakes at 3.15, which brings together the winners of the English and Irish Guineas in Kameko and the unbeaten Siskin as well as the rapidly improving Mohaather from the Marcus Tregoning yard.

These three head the betting market, with Siskin installed as 15-8 favourite and there is no way to compare the form of the principals, none of which has tried the unique experience of Goodwood before either.

One horse who has is Circus Maximus, who finished a neck second in this race last year behind Too Darned Hot when a 3-y-o and hasn’t stood still since, winning at Royal Ascot on his reappearance in June. This is a horse that definitely doesn’t want to be beaten and, although there could be a potential superstar amongst his opponents, we think he warrants an each way bet at 11-2.

Televised coverage starts at 1.45 with the Unibet Goodwood Handicap over a jumper’s trip and it could pay to look at last year’s result to provide the key to this 16 runner marathon.

Seinesational and True Destiny finished second and third, separated by less than a length and both have clearly been laid out for another go. Despite being 4lbs worse off, the market favours True Destiny at 4-1, compared with the 11-1 about Bill Knight‘s runner, so we recommend a win bet on the former and an each way punt on the latter.

The Unibet Handicap at 2.15 has a field of 11, with the favourite Win O’Clock at 4-1. Roger Charlton‘s colt was unlucky in his only try over today’s trip at Royal Ascot, enduring a nightmarish passage before staying on to be 7th of 17. Before and after, he has easily won two 10 furlong handicaps and, off only 4lbs higher, should be backed to take this.

Main danger could be Braveheart‘s Glenties, the mount of William Buick, easy winner at Windsor last time out when stepped up to this trip and we should ‘dutch’ this race with this one at 5-1.

The remaining two televised races are both 5f affairs which we may well have swerved in the past, but after our ‘stunning’ success with 16-1 poke Only Spoofing yesterday we’ll have a quiet go.

We think that Significantly is the one to be with in the Market Insurance Molecomb Stakes at 2.45, even though Karl Burke‘s charge has been beaten into second place in all his three races thus far. Excuses have been made, the trainer is keeping the faith and we should too. 9-2 are the odds of reward for this Northern beastie.

The (deep breath) British Stallion Studs Alice Keppel EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes at 3.45 will probably be over by the time the commentator has read out the race title, especially if Sprite runs as fast as it did at York last time out, winning by more than 5 lengths. ‘Could be anything’ sums it up and we go for a Karl Burke double at 7-4.

C’est tout, mes amis – nous retournons demain.
