LEADER OF THE PACK

LEADER OF THE PACK
August 19, 2020 Lee Bolingbroke

First day of the York Ebor Festival is on our screens today, with the highlight at 3.15 being the Juddmonte International Stakes.

Just five runners go to post and four of them have our favourite ‘monster’ to beat, in the shape of Ghaiyyath.

Charlie Appleby‘s 5-y-o has been our (winning) selection in his last two races and we do not desert him now. Despite the presence of a possible ‘spoiler’ in Rose Of Kildare, we expect Ghaiyyath to lead this pack from the off and complete the hat-trick. Take the 11-8 on offer.

Coverage starts with the SkyBet & Symphony Group Handicap at 1.45, with just a mere 22 runners careering down the Knavesmire over a sprint trip – oh goody.

Intense analysis of these sort of races is usually futile, with the ‘who’s turn is it today?’ factor kicking in, so we just advise modest each way bets on Arecibo at 7-1, Aplomb at 10-1 and a tiny bit on Istanbul at an artisan 50-1.

Sanity returns with the Tattersalls Acomb Stakes at 2.15, a Group 3 for the youngsters. We think this is between the fav Cloudbridge and Royal Scimitar, so we will have a go at playing safe and suggest a win bet on the former at 6-4 and an each way punt on the latter at 9-2.

The SkyBet Great Voltigeur Stakes at 2.45 has a dead eight field, headed by Mogul, who did us a favour at Glorious Goodwood by taking the Gordon Stakes at 9-2. Not that price today, but still well worth a bet at 2-1 now he’s developed the winning habit.

The SkyBet Handicap over 2 miles at 3.45 completes the televised action and, although there’s a field of 17, we are very keen on the chances of Make My Day, a 4-y-o owned by Clint Eastwood. (No, not really)

Ralph Beckett‘s 4-y-o has had only 4 races in its life, 3 of those for John Gosden last season. Couldn’t have made a better start to life with Ralph than when taking a 12 furlong handicap on this course in the middle of July off a mark of 84. Up six lbs and up four furlongs, but plenty more to come and with 5 places on offer, we recommend a decent each way bet at 4-1.

OK, now let’s find out if it’s Jimmy‘s ring she’s wearing.

Summary:

Ghaiyyath 3.15 York 5pts win @ 11-8

Arecibo 1.45 York 1pt e/w @ 7-1 (6 places Hills/PaddyPower)

Aplomb 1.45 York 1pt e/w @ 10-1 (6 places Hills/PaddyPower)

Istanbul 1.45 York 0.5pts e/w @ 40-1 (6 places Hills/PaddyPower)

Cloudbridge 2.15 York 4pts win @ 6-4

Royal Scimitar 2.15 York 1pt e/w @ 9-2

Mogul 2.45 York 2pts win @ 2-1

Make My Day 3.45 York 2.5pts e/w @ 4-1 (5 places general)
