Day 3 of the York Ebor Festival today and we are indebted to Tovares (or Take That) for the headline, which refers to Battaash winning the Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at 3.15.
With a ‘dead eight’ field and 40-1 bar three, it could be tempting to put up an each way selection just for a giggle, but, adopting serious mode, Battaash should do its usual blitz job at around 4-9 and we advise just a watching brief.
Telly coverage starts with the SkyBet Handicap at 1.45 and the fav in this is supplied by Braveheart in the shape of Zabeel Champion at 15-8.
Raised 3lbs for a good second at Glorious Goodwood, this 3-y-o also steps up to 12 furlongs for the first time and there must be doubts that this will suit.
We prefer the chances of the trainer’s other one, King’s Caper, the mount of Joe Fanning. Also a 3-y-o, this one was just touched off in the Italian Derby last month and was noted staying on nicely, again at the Glorious meeting, over today’s trip. At 17-2, this is a value each way bet.
Stayers take centre stage at 2.15 in the Lonsdale Cup Stakes and we turn to said Braveheart once more for our selection Nayef Road.
There is no Stradivarius in the field today for Nayef Road to come second to, which he has the last twice in Group 1s and the calmer waters of this afternoon’s Group 2 could provide adequate compensation. Take the 3-1 available.
The other televised race we can only surmise is a scheduling cock-up, as it’s a Maiden over 7f at 3.45 and we have no intention of getting involved with that one, either.
The EBF Fillies’ Handicap at 4.15 was probably supposed to be on the box, so to make up for the missing races, we suggest a decent bet on the fav, Asiaaf, which looks nailed on to take this race after a couple of excellent recent outings. Bash the 2-1.
Nine races tomorrow, including the eponymous Ebor – see you then.
King’s Caper 1.45 York 1.5pts e/w @ 17-2
Nayef Road 2.15 York 3pts win @ 3-1
Asiaaf 4.15 York 4pts win @ 2-1
