It was Mama Cass last time, now it’s the Eurythmics providing the lead in to the headline horse which takes centre stage at the televised meeting at Haydock this afternoon.
That horse is Dream Of Dreams, which contests the Group 1 Betfair Sprint Stakes at 3.25 and is currently trading at 3-1 to follow up its devastating victory in the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.
That race was over 7f rather than today’s six, but the improvement shown last time out was not owing to the trip but more to the removal of a couple of bits of its anatomy, which has, er, made a man of him (if you get our drift).
Anyway, with no Battaash to worry about, this rates a strong bet at the stated price.
Televised action starts with the Betfair Superior Mile Stakes at 1.45 in which Khaloosy is on a recovery mission, having bombed out on Good to Firm ground at Goodwood when going off at 4-7. Different ground, different track suggest we might see a different Khaloosy today, so we keep the faith and recommend a bet at 2-1.
The Betfair Exchange Old Borough Cup Handicap at 2.50 is the next race to catch our eye and, with not a 3-y-o in sight, this 17 runner affair has the look of a ‘whose turn is it today?’ event.
We hope it just might be the turn of our old mate Euchen Glen, which has been plying its trade with honour this season since returning from more than a year on the sidelines and is sure to give us a run for the pelf. Have an each way bet at 16-1.
Ascot also features on the box today, with the Lavazza Stakes Handicap at 3.05 first up.
Roger Varian‘s Shandoz is our main fancy for this, having won over course and distance first time out, when said by his trainer to be ‘not fully wound up’.
If that’s true, then the measly 4lb rise will not prevent a follow up win and, at 5-1, this rates a cracking each way bet.
Right down at the foot of the weights, we also give a squeak to handicap debutante Noble Masquerade, which proved this trip holds no fears last time out. Have a smaller each way at 18-1 on this one under ‘Our Hayley’.
The sprint handicap at 3.40 is a wide open affair for which we suggest each way bets on Jonah Jones at 9-2 and Rathbone at 9-1.
The Porsche Handicap at 4.15 is highly competitive over the straight seven furlongs, but our trusty pin has landed on Willie John from Roger Varian‘s yard. This 5-y-o has been tried over a variety of trips but won over a straight seven on its racecourse debut and has not tried it since. Hope springs eternal but at 15-2 an each way punt could pay dividends.
That’s all, folks – now off to cancel our trip to the Algarve.
