STAYING ON TRACK
September 10, 2020 Lee Bolingbroke

Day 2 of the Doncaster St Leger meeting takes place today without spectators after a ruling from the Public Health Officials.

Fortunately the horses won’t know that and sometimes you just have to Covid the flow, as it were.

Centrepiece of today’s action is the Group2 bet365 Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes at 3.15, which currently has a field of seven.

Short priced favourite is the rapidly improving Believe In Love, which has made mincemeat of the opposition in four handicaps, improving her rating from 76 to 107 in the process. A worthy fav, probably, but 6-4 is a mite skinny for this column.

We prefer to go for another potential improver in Joseph O’Brien’s fily Pista, the mount of Will Buick. This daughter of American Pharoah circled the field to win a Listed event over this trip at Leopardstown 4 weeks ago and looked as if there’s plenty more to come after only 3 races. Italian for ‘racetrack’, Pista can land the headline bet at 5-1.

Action begins at 1.40 with the ‘Carrie Red’ Fillies Nursery Handicap over just short of 7 furlongs and in this we like the chances of Nazuna from the Roger Varian stable. Comfortable winner of her second start (on this course), her debut run at Goodwood at the end of July suggests her opening mark of 80 maybe an underestimation of her ability. We hope so, anyway, and suggest backing her at 9-2.

At 2.10 the bet365 May Hill Stakes takes place and, although the 6-4 favourite Zabeel Queen has sound claims, we prefer the chances of another Joseph O’Brien runner Ubuntu, which is apparently a software programme, in case you are interested.

Just touched off in a Curragh Group 3 two weeks ago, on just her second run, this young lady is coming on leaps and bounds and at 17-2 is the value punt, again under Mr Buick.

The 2.40 is an impossible looking Sales race, to which we apply the Spanish Archer and move swiftly on to the final televised race at 3.15 the bet365 Handicap over the straight seven furlongs.

We will throw two sporting darts at this, the beasties concerned being Black Caspian at 10-1 and Milltown Star at an almost insulting 25-1.

A somewhat low key day today but hope springs eternal.

Summary:

Pista 3.15 Doncaster 1.5pts e/w @ 5-1 (2 places)

Nazuna 1.40 Doncaster 1.5pts e/w @ 9-2 (4 places)

Ubuntu 2.10 Doncaster 1pt e/w @ 17-2

Black Caspian 3.45 Doncaster 1pt e/w @ 10-1 (4 places)

Milltown Star 3.45 Doncaster 1pt e/w @ 25-1 (4 places)
