THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT…….

THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT…….
May 7, 2021 Lee Bolingbroke

……but not this afternoon.

Acknowledgement to The Tokens (1961) and Tight Fit (1982) who both had Number 1 hits with the song which leads us into Chester Cup day at the Boodles Festival.

The eponymous race takes place at 2.45 with a field of 17 and, as ever at Chester, the draw is likely to play its part. Any double figure trap number is difficult to overcome and it makes sense to concentrate on those drawn lower.

Our first stab is Coeur De Lion, trained by Alan King.

This hardy 8-y-o won the ‘Plate‘ version of this race in 2019, stays longer than your mother-in-law and likes a bit of give in the ground. Drawn eight and with the Norse Warrior on board as usual we suggest an each way bet at 10-1.

We also throw in a minor investment on one of Braveheart‘s phalanx, Lucky Deal at 33-1. This little chap has a mind of its own but could well outrun its odds from Trap 6 if on a going day.

Televised action starts with the Tote Earl Grosvenor Handicap at 1.45 and, with course form always important here, we make Revich our main selection.

Course figures of 3 from 5 speak for themselves, two recent runs to prepare and stall 1 allotted make this a decent bet at 2-1.

We also suggest an each way ‘saver’ on Ascension, trained by Roger Varian, which ran better than a finishing position of ninth in the Lincoln and should have come on bundles for that run. 13-2 will do for us.

Te Melodi Media Huxley Stakes at 2.15 has just the four taking part and the statutory Aiden O’Brien runner Armory is a skinny priced favourite at 11-10.

On official ratings this should win, but the colt hasn’t run since finishing second in the Cox Plate last October and is against three promising rivals.

For betting purposes we will apply the Spanish Archer and give it the swerve.

At 3.15, the Boodles Conditions Stakes sees the reappearance of another course specialist El Astronaute from the John Quinn yard. Has to shoulder a 3lb penalty in this race, but should be good enough so to do and we recommend a win bet at 11-8.

The Retraining of Racehorses Handicap at 3.45 completes the Chester coverage and our selection in this one is Lunar Jet.

John Mackie‘s 7-y-o rattled up a hat-trick towards the end of last season and  arrives here after a warm up run at Newcastle. With the King Of Chester up top, the No. 2 draw and some decent course form, the 11-1 on offer should be taken.

Market Rasen is the venue for today’s extra televised race and the powers that be have chosen the Unibet Handicap Chase at 2.00 for our visual delight.

We like the look of Compadre in this.

James Evans‘ 10-y-o is already a dual course winner and ran a stormer last time out at Haddock, looking all over the winner until mugged by a fast finisher. A repeat of that effort will see it go very close this afternoon and we recommend an each way bet at 8-1.

May the 7th go with you.
