……the rain has gone and we can see no obstacles in our way, except, of course, the ones at Market Rasen which is the venue for three televised races this afternoon.

The Betway Summer Handicap Hurdle at 2.05 has a field of 15, headed in the market by Camprond from the Philip Hobbs yard.

This 5-y-o can boast top class handicap form this season and warmed up for this by taking a Novice hurdle over this CD by a facile 17 lengths. Didn’t beat much but proved its well-being and, off a workable mark of 134, should be backed at a very fair 7-2.

Emma Lavelle poses a problem in this race by saddling two, with the apprentice ridden Hang In There much shorter in the betting than the Tom Bellamy ridden Voice Of Calm. We much prefer the latter, which is lightly raced and improving, so an each way bet at 14-1 is recommended.

At 2.40 we get the Betway Summer Plate Handicap Chase, in which Captain Tom Cat attempts to defy an opening handicap mark of 147.

The Good Doctor‘s 6-y-o has been a revelation since going over the larger obstacles, racking up a hat-trick of small field Novice events, but today’s jaunt is surely a completely different cauldron of tuna and we must oppose.

We suggest each way bets on two improvers – That’s A Given at 12-1 and Fire Away at 8-1.

The Betway Handicap Hurdle at 3.10 completes the coverage at this meeting and, although there are just the ‘dead eight’ runners, this looks trappy, with a chance given to every runner. We will cautiously suggest a win bet on Taste The Fear at 4-1.

Cameras are also at the meeting at Newbury for four races, beginning with the Listed bet365 Stakes at 1.50.

This looks a good opportunity for Movin Time to gain compensation for an unlucky outing at Royal Ascot and we can just squeeze an each way bet here at 4-1.

The Bahrein Turf Series Handicap at 2.25 over 2 miles looks a good opportunity for The Man With The Golden Gun aka Scaramanga to get off the mark on the level. Paul Nicholls‘ 6-y-o is rated 144 over hurdles and should be very competitive off 86, with Our Hayley doing the shoving. Have an each way bet at 7-1.

We also give Just Hubert one last chance, with newly applied headgear and perfect ground conditions. Have a tweak at 11-1.

The bet365 Hackwood Stakes at 3.00 is next up, with Tabdeed trying to win this race for the second time, a feat no other horse has ever achieved. The gelding’s chances are much respected after a promising seasonal debut at Newcastle, but we have been waiting for Diligent Harry to make his turf debut and it happens today.

In front of Tabdeed in the aforementioned Newcastle race, DH would have run at Royal Ascot in a Group 1 until the heavens opened and today’s task is easier than that. Have a win bet at 7-2.

That just leaves the simple matter of the 22-runner 5f Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes at 3.40.

On paper at least, this looks a two horse race, despite the size of the field and our trusty pin has landed on Vintage Clarets, from the Richard Fahey yard that has landed this prize three times in recent years. Have a win bet at 3-1 and hope it can turn over the fav.

Now back to the golf.
