Day 2 of Glorious Goodwood is upon us, with the highlight at 3.35, when the Qatar Sussex Stakes takes place.

Poetic Flare is a short priced favourite for this race after his impressive win in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot. That race was run on good to firm ground before the heavens opened and conditions will be very different this afternoon.

Our idea of the winner is Alcohol Free (cf headline) trained by Andrew Balding. Owner Jeff Smith goes for a double in this race, having won it in……..1984(!)

Already twice a Group 1 winner, Alcohol Free will relish the soft ground and can reverse last time out form with Snow Lantern, which came on good to firm. At 4-1, we’ll have a decent each way bash.

Proceedings start at 1.50 with the Unibet Handicap and we have no hesitation in nominating Kolisi as the one to be with.

Willie and Tom‘s horse makes its handicap debut off an attractive looking mark, should benefit from the step up in trip and love the ground. So what’s not to like? Er, nothing – back it each way at 13-2.

The Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes at 2.25 looks a good opportunity for Onassis to return to the winners’ enclosure. A winner of two Listed races last season, Charlie Fellowes‘ 4-y-o has her ideal trip and ground today and can give Our Hayley a deserved big winner. We recommend an each way bet at 11-2.

Favourites do occasionally win and we hope that’s the case in the Markel Molecomb Stakes at 3.00 when Fearby struts his stuff.

Unfashionable trainers sometimes train fashionable horses and Edward Bethell‘s flying machine showed what he can do by taking a Sandown Listed race last time out by no less than 5 lengths, leaving the rest of the field looking like selling platers.

No fluke, we think, more the ‘real deal’ and we should get on at 13-8.

Just in case, we also recommend an each way ‘saver’ on the unexposed and unbeaten Chimgan, a ‘could be anything’ runner available at 18-1.

Last but not least is the Conditions race at 4.10, which has a title we can’t be asked to type.

In the absence of the morning favourite, this race has a more open look about it and we suggest an each way bet on Richard Fahey‘s representative La Feile, who produced a storming finish to win on debut at Beverley and isn’t here to make up the numbers. 13-2 is freely available.

More whimsical musings tomorrow, when we’ll have a new headline.
