Back to 1967 and Neil Diamond for today’s lead in to Day 3 of Glorious Goodwood and we would point out that this week’s seeming fixation with alcoholic beverages is entirely co-incidental and not a lifestyle comment.
Centrepiece of the action is the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes at 3.35 which has a field of six, headed by AO’B‘s runner Joan Of Arc at 15-8.
This 3-y-o was last seen taking the Prix Diane at Chantilly in the middle of June, beating sixteen others.
Probably has a favourite’s chance, but we’ve decided to take her on with the globe-trotting mare Audarya, trained by James Fanshawe.
Named after a Sicilian vineyard, Audarya sprang to life at the end of last season, pouching Group 1s at Deauville and Keeneland before taking a well earned break. The improvement she showed appeared to be maintained on her re-appearance at Royal Ascot, when she ran a close second to Love in the Prince of Wales’ Stakes and she could well make it three Group 1s today.
Have a win bet at 5-2.
The Unibet Handicap at 1.50 kicks off the action over ten furlongs, with Braveheart accounting for four of the eleven strong field. We will take on the Johnston battalions with an each way bet on Patient Dream, trained by Roger Charlton.
This gelded son of Al Kazeem is just 3lbs higher than when winning its latest race at Windsor and with the excellent Ray Dawson able to claim 3lbs, its ratings chance is obvious. Bash it at 9-2.
The Unibet Richmond Stakes at 2.25 looks at the mercy of Alan King‘s runner Asymmetric and we will be backing it, won’t we?
A course and distance win on racecourse debut was followed by a win under a penalty at Newmarket and an unlucky second in the July Stakes, also at HQ.
This is undoubtedly the best form on offer and a win bet at 9-4 is suggested.
Were there to be a bit of a turn-up it could come from Caturra, very much on the improve and a recommended saver bet at 7-1.
Next up is the Gordon Stakes at 3.00 and it’s hard to look further than Third Realm for the winner – so we won’t.
Roger Varian‘s charge had the honour of beating subsequent Derby and King George winner Adayar in the Lingfield Derby Trial in May before finishing 5th at Epsom and, frankly, should take care of today’s opposition.
The 2-1 available might look like a gift at 3.05 – we hope so.
Televised proceedings end with the Goodwood Racecourse Patrons’ Nursery Handicap at 4.10 and, although this type of race is fraught with danger, we can’t resist a modest each way bet on South Audley at an artisan 12-1.
Possibly the lesser fancied of Richard Hannon‘s two, the market has been wrong before and South Audley looks favourably handicapped after a smooth victory at Nottingham. “Go on, Pat” is the phrase to use if appropriate.
Jusqu’a demain, mes amis.
