COOL CAN BE THE DADDY

COOL CAN BE THE DADDY

The Doncaster St Leger meeting continues today, with five races on the box, headed by the Doncaster Cup Stakes at 2.40.

Much of the interest has been removed from this race by the not unexpected withdrawal of Trueshan, after the expected rain failed to arrive, leaving Stradivarius as the 4-9 favourite.

Although clearly not quite the horse he was, Strad should take care of business and with a field of just six this is a ‘no bet’ race.

First up for ITV is the Flying Scotsman Stakes at 1.40, a Listed contest with nine runners.

With no interlocking form lines between the main protagonists, this looks tricky but we think each way bets on Razzle Dazzle at 6-1 and Eldrickjones at 8-1 could pay dividends.

Razzle Dazzle won its second start by five and a half lengths at Newmarket two weeks ago and future Group 1 entries are an indication that the Hannon yard rate him a bit, while Eldrickjones has been crying out for 7f on decent ground since his staying on second in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The Flying Childers Stakes at 2.10 has a very short priced fav in the shape of Armor, which demolished the field in a Group 3 at Goodwood before finishing 4th in a Group 1 at Deauville. Both those runs were with plenty of cut and Hannon‘s flyer was well beaten at Royal Ascot on good to firm, so we  can’t recommend a bet at 5-4.

We can, instead, suggest an each way bet on George Boughey‘s runner Corazon, which followed a win at Leafy by a gritty victory in a Longchamp Group 3 just eight days ago. Showed a really good attitude that day and, with Will Buick on board, the 9-1 on offer has its attractions.

The first of two handicaps, the Mallard Handicap takes place at 3.15, with eleven runners standing their ground.

Our primary pick for this is Uber Cool, trained by Jane Chapple-Hyam.

This 7-y-o returned from an absence of 959 days(!) to win at Chester in May, since when the gelding has finished 3rd at Ascot and 4th in a Listed race at Chester again, 3 weeks ago. Still off a competitive mark with today’s trip and ground ideal we must have a decent each way bet at 9-2.

Our other suggestion is a modest each way bet on Sovereign Duke from Henry Candy‘s yard. Placed off a mark of 90 when previously trained by HC, this 6-y-o has returned home after 4 abortive runs over hurdles for Jamie Snowden and finished 2nd 3 weeks ago over today’s trip a Sandown. Now running off 84 and with young Saffie taking off 5lbs, this looks worth an each way tickle at 14-1.

The Cazoo Handicap at 3.45 rounds off proceedings and in this we like the chances of Chairmanoftheboard and Raatea.

The aforenamed has been threatening to return to last season’s best form in  its last three races, while also dropping in the weights and today could just be the day.

The 4-y-o Raatea won so well at Newmarket last time out that we think a 5lb impost may not preclude another sterling effort. 9-2 & 10-1 are the prices.

Annoyingly, no ‘finisher’ about the 5th Test – it’s orff.

Summary:

Razzle Dazzle 1.40 Doncaster 1.5pts e/w @ 6-1 (4 places Betfair)

Eldrickjones 1.40 Doncaster 1pt e/w @ 8-1

Corazon 2.10 Doncaster 1pt e/w @ 9-1 (4 places SkyBet)

Uber Cool 3.15 Doncaster 2pts e/w @ 9-2 (4 places)

Sovereign Duke 3.15 Doncaster 1pt e/w @ 14-1 (4 places BetVictor)

Chairmanoftheboard 3.45 Doncaster 1.5pts e/w @ 9-2 (4 places)

Raatea 3.45 Doncaster 1pt e/w @ 10-1 (4 places)
