TEN OF THE BEST

TEN OF THE BEST

Yes, people, that’s how many races are on telly today, beamed from Newbury, Kelso and Doncaster.

We are gonna have a go at them all, so let’s begin in Berkshire with the Veterans’ Handicap Chase at 1.15.

Just seven runners are due to take part and this represents a big drop in class for the jolly Kauto Riko. Tom Gretton‘s 11-y-o crossed swords with Chantry House at Cheltenham last time out, finishing an honourable fourth and will meet nothing of that quality today. We should have a win bet at 2-1.

The Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase at 1.50 is the other televised race from Newbury and this race has been the target for course specialist Dublin Four since its fall at Ludlow late last year. Already twice a winner on this track, DF gets in here with just 10st 6lbs and looks a cracking each way bet at 5-1.

We also expect Amoola Gold to outrun its odds of 14-1 and recommend an each way tickle on this one as well.

Now over to Kelso for five races, stating with the bet365 Premier Novices’ Hurdle at 1.32, which has a field of 9. Plenty of Southern raiders take part in this but we’ll take a chance on It’s Good To Laugh from the stable of Jennie Candlish.

This 5-y-o is 3-4 over hurdles and has improved its jumping with each race, which it needed to do, but if it pits its best hoof forward today, this 94 rated Flat racer may have too much toe for the opposition. Have a tad each way at 14-1.

At 2.05 the bet365 Handicap Hurdle looks a good opportunity for Famous Bridge to gain compensation for an unlucky unseat last time out over this CD.

Not guaranteed to have won that day but every chance when Brian Hughes fell off after the second last and, off just 1lb higher, 2-1 is worth a bet.

The bet365 Premier Chase at 2.40 has a short priced favourite in Espoir De Romay, which is currently a 6-5 shot. Well clear of its field on official ratings, Kim Bailey‘s 8-y-o is without a run since October and may have stamina doubts in the forecast heavy ground.

One horse that has no stamina doubts and is in love with Kelso is the evergreen Big River, which will be plugging on when the others have had enough. We can’t resist an each way bash at 13-2.

At 3.15 the valuable bet365 Morebattle Hurde takes place with a competitive field of 11 and we think Metier will win it.

Harry Fry‘s 6-y-o can’t have the ground soft enough and returned to form last time out when winning at Lingfield in January. A 7lb rise hopefully won’t be enough to stop this Grade 1 winner from last season. Take the 7-2.

If there is a danger it might be the Irish trained Saint D’Oroux, which won here last month and has a capable amateur taking off half a stone today. A small each way saver at 11-1 is advised.

Kelso action ends with the bet365 Novices’ Limited Handicap Chase which should see Hardy Du Seuil get back on the winning trail now back I hadicap company. A win bet at 7-4 is recommended.

And finally to Doncaster for three races, the first of which is the Virgin Bet Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at 2.20.

Miss Fairfax looks to have the best form in this and should be backed at 9-4 to complete her hat-trick.

One runner which might outrun her odds is Eureka Creek, which has 4 lengths to find on Miss Fairfax but is still improving, so an each way bet at 16-1 is advised.

The Virgin Bet Handicap Chase at 2.55 looks at the mercy of The Big Bite from Henry Oliver‘s yard and we suggest backing it at 11-4. For safety’s sake we also advise a reverse forecast with Cheddleton.

At long last we come to the final race, the Virgin Bet Grimthorpe Handicap Chase at 3.30 and, in the hope that young Daire McConville can hang on to Storm Control longer than he did last time, we recommend a win bet at 7-2.

That’s it – now for a lie down.
