David Kirkpatrick (aka Slim Dusty) leads us into the final day of the York Dante meeting with his worldwide 1957 smash, incidentally the only 78rpm record to go gold.
A Pub With No Beer is a reasonable definition of a vile inn, which heralds the appearance of Stradivarius in the feature Paddy Power Yorkshire Stakes at 3.35.
Strad is an unbeaten 5 from 5 on the Knavesmire and has the ideal ground conditions for the seasonal comeback but, at a skinny 6-5 we’ll take it on with the Irish challenger Search For A Song.
Dermot Weld‘s 6-y-o mare is a dual Irish St Leger winner and warmed up for today with a second behind Kyprios at Navan 3 weeks ago. Getting a handy 6lb from the favourite, we suggest a win bet at 5-2.
Card starts with the Listed Marygate Fillies’ Stakes at 1.50, which sees 16 2-y-o youngsters belting down 5f of the York turf – oh goody.
Not, perhaps, a race to get too involved in, but there is little doubt that Miami Girl deserves her place at the head of the market after her near 6 length demolition of some fancied opponents at Newmarket on Mayday. At a palatable 5-2 we’ll venture a win bet.
The Oak Farm Stables Listed Stakes at 2.25 gives Grande Dame a chance to justify the accolades after her impressive debut win at Ascot last month, before going on to Royal Ascot. She is against other improvers, of course, but the Mad Italian should be able to come home in front. Have a win bet at 5-2.
At 3.00 we get the Paddy Power Handicap and our old friend Rogue Bear is favourite for this at 15-8. Tom Clover‘s 4-y-o was unlucky in the Lincoln and got going too late at Newbury over a mile. The step up to ten furlongs looks sure to suit and RB deserves a win on the CV. Back it accordingly.
We also like the profile of Parachute in this race, with Ed Walker‘s charge dropping back two furlongs and with headgear for the first time. Well worth an each way investment at 11-2.
The other handicap on telly is another Paddy Power Handicap at 4.10 and we will take on the 6-4 favourite with an each way bet on Speycaster at 11-2.
Ralph Beckett‘s yard had a welcome winner recently, a sign that all is now well and this Highland Reel colt looks to be crying out for this afternoon’s step up in trip.
‘Bonus’ race on ITV today is the 2.05 Newbury, a seven runner affair over 6f.
With three of the major firms offering three places, we can’t resist picking Indian Creak (not a typo) from Mick Channon‘s yard. A winner last season off 5lbs higher than today, this 5-y-o looked to be coming into form on second run back from a break. With SDS aboard, 7-1 is tempting, so we will be tempted.
Back, as usual, tomorrow.
