Penultimate day of Royal Ascot, on which ties may be discarded owing to the extreme heat – so that’s alright, then.
First race at 2.30 is the Albany Stakes, a Group 3 contest for fillies over 6f, headed in the market by Saeed bin Suroor‘s runner Mawj.
There is no doubt that Mawj put up a spectacular performance on racecourse debut, coming well clear of the rest at Newmarket under today’s pilot Ray Dawson. Second that day was Believing, which won cosily next time out and re-opposes this afternoon, but must be up against it trying to turn the tables.
Although this is one of those selections that always seem to get turned over by a rag (see first race yesterday) we can’t not pick it and recommend a win bet at 7-4.
The Group 1 Commonwealth Cup at 3.05 will see 20 runners spread across the course and the two that catch our beady are Go Bears Go and El Caballo.
GBG can continue his love affair with Ascot, being a dual winner already, while EC is a winning machine that keeps on improving. 9-1 and 13-2 are the respective odds available.
First of the day’s handicaps is the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at 3.40, which is a 5-1 the field race.
One again we dutch, with each way bets on Candleford at 13-2 and Cemhaan at an artisan 16-1, both each way.
At 4.20, the Coronation Stakes sees the return to action of the unbeaten Inspiral, which was odds-on for the 1000 Guineas before being deemed ‘not ready’. On the grounds that this filly might have a bit of rust and also that perhaps her jockey is not quite at his best (cf Stradivarius) we recommend an each way bet on Prosperous Voyage at 9-1. Second to Inspiral twice at the end of last season and just beaten a neck in the 1000 Guineas, Ralph Beckett‘s girl deserves a change of fortune – let’s hope it’s today.
Another mega handicap at 5.00, this one called the Sandringham Stakes over the straight mile.
We have selected two from the 28 strong field and suggest each way bets on Fresh Hope at 7-1 and Washraa at 16-1.
The King Edward VII Stakes at 5.35 has just six runners and the market makes it a match between Changingoftheguard and Ottoman Fleet, which are both priced up at around 7-4. With no apparent way to compare the form, we swerve this race and move on to the 6.10, which comes firmly into the ‘God help us’ category.
The Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes is a 5f handicap with 28 runners, which we wouldn’t usually touch with anyone’s barge pole.
However, we hope that Our Hayley can ride a Royal Ascot double (she is also on Fresh Hope) and suggest a modest each way on her mount Latin Lover at 10-1.
Back for the finale tomorrow.
