Moving swiftly on from yesterday’s (rare) blank day, the York Ebor meeting culminates this afternoon with the, er, Ebor at 3.35.
A field of 20 stand their ground and the market is dominated by the Irish challenger Earl Of Tyrone at 9-2.
That may seem a skinny price for a race of this nature but Paddy Twomey‘s 4-y-o holds outstanding claims on the book, having completed a hat-trick of victories at Limerick in June. This was the same race that last year’s winner Sonnyboyliston pouched and Earl Of Tyrone is lower in the weights than that one. A win bet is advised.
We can’t possibly leave this race without suggesting an each way bet on our old mate Euchen Glen, which came right back to its best form last time out and is a stone lower than finishing 4thin this race in 2020. 12-1 is the price of Jim Goldie‘s sprightly 9-y-o.
The card starts with the Group 3 Strensall Stakes at 1.50 which the market has as a match between old protagonists Mighty Ulysses (10-11)and Alflaila (5-2) with upwards of 10-1 available the others.
With an extra furlong and a more recent run, we take Alflaila to reverse the previous result and suggest a win bet.
The Sky Bet Melrose Handicap at 2.25 is probably the premier handicap race for 3-y-os and we think Mr Haggas‘s Soulcombe may take it.
An easy winner of two handicaps before a desperately unlucky fourth at Glorious Goodwood, this Frankel gelding can put the record straight under the fragrant Hollie nad should be backed at 4-1.
Tom Marquand can’t do the weight on Soulcombe, but he has picked up an interesting ride called Sheer Rocks, which has looked to be crying out for this step up in trip and, at 16-1, Eve‘s runner is well worth an each way to upset the apple cart.
At 3.00 we get the Group 2 City Of York Stakes and hope to see Sacred making it third time lucky this season, having had none at all in the first two.
Willie‘s 4-y-o should get the chance to show what she can do and we recommend a lumpy punt at 100-30.
The horrendous looking sprint at 4.10 we’re gonna swerve and move on to the other televised meeting at Sandown.
Just the two races, starting with the Atalanta Stakes at 2.05, which has the Gozzies runner Grand Dame as favourite at 15-8. However, we prefer the chances of Fonteyn, which beat the fav at York in May and ran an absolute stormer in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes over ten furlongs, looking the winner until stamina just ran out at the business end. Back to a mile today, she has to be the bet at 11-4.
That just leaves the Solario Stakes at 2.40, which features three of the most promising 2-y-os yet seen out this season. On balance, we plump for Defence Of Fort, which stormed home by nearly 5 lengths on debut at Ascot and loos to be the star of Peter Chapple-Hyam‘s yard. Have a win bet at 7-2.
That’s yer lot – here’s hoping we don’t do a ‘bazball’.
