WHO’D BE A JOCKEY?

Story of the past week has involved the trials and tribulations of a certain Kieran Shoemark, who has had a few days to regret.

It all started with his ride on Field of Gold in the 2000 Guineas, undoubtedly the best horse in the race but just failing to get up after an exaggerated hold-up ride.

Described by Gosden Senior, through gritted teeth, as ‘overconfident’, the news that young Kieran had lost his job as first jockey for the yard quickly followed.

If that weren’t enough for the lad, move on to the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches at Longchamp on Sunday, in which Shes Perfect, ridden by our hero, was first past the post only to be disqualified for causing interference to the (French-trained) favourite. It never rains etc etc.

Elsewhere in the racing world, Aiden O’Brien has been hoovering up more Classic trials than you can shake a proverbial stick at, resulting in four of the first five in the Derby betting all being trained at Ballydoyle, with Ryan Moore yet to nominate his preference. Current fav for Epsom is The Lion In Winter, which goes in the Dante on Thursday and will have to win impressively to usurp Delacroix at the top of the market.

While all this has been going on last week, we’ve been busy supplying no less than seven winners, at prices up to 7-1 and long may it continue.
